Fun things to do with kids this half term
October half term is a time to unwind and have some fun with the autumn season! If you’re looking for some ideas to entertain your kids, we’re sharing what we’re most looking forward to doing with ours over the next few weeks. Whether you want to bundle up for an autumnal outdoor adventure, show off your pumpkin carving prowess or get spooky in time for some Halloween horrors there’s something on this list for your family to enjoy this half term!
For the little ones
Go on an Autumn Treasure Hunt with Percy The Park Keeper
Puppetry, theatrical storytelling and clue-based adventures await at Chiswick House and Gardens this October and November. Round up your little ones and join Percy the Park Keeper and his animal friends on a fun-filled autumnal treasure hunt. If you fancy some pumpkin picking to complete your seasonal adventure, there’s also a Pumpkin Patch on the grounds! Be sure to book early to secure your spot. Oh, and don’t forget your wellies!
Celebrate Halloween on a farm!
If, like us, you’re worried about indoor Halloween activities this year due to COVID-19, why not celebrate Halloween in the great outdoors at a farm instead? Your kids will love playing with the animals and with loads of organised Halloween activities you won’t lose any of the scary fun! From 23rd-31st October you can solve a creepy mystery at Fairytales Farm, take part in spooky arts and crafts and enter a costume competition at Foxholes Farm, or attend the Halloween Festival at Odds Farm Park where you can carve pumpkins and explore the Tricky Trail!
Enjoy a Winnie the Pooh-inspired adventure
The natural magic of Ashdown Forest inspired A. A Milne to create the world of Winnie The Pooh and his friends – some of our nation’s most loved characters! This half term your family can discover first-hand the wonders of the Hundred Acre Wood by taking one of the Winnie The Pooh trails. Along the way you’ll see well-known spots including Roo’s Sandy Pit, The North Pole, the Heffalump Trap and of course, Poohsticks Bridge, where you can play your very own game of Poohsticks!
For the over 6s
Go Pumpkin Picking at Garsons
We love making the most of the lovely fresh produce at our fingertips during the harvest season. This half term you too can take the kids for a wholesome day out fruit and vegetable picking! Make it Halloween-themed by gathering up pumpkins for carving, or simply let them explore the fields to pick apples, cabbages and squashes to cook some yummy warming recipes with them at home. Find a Garson’s Pick Your Own Farm near you and let your kids become farmers for a day!
Delve into the Darks Arts at Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studios
If your kids are total potter-heads it’s likely you’ve already taken a trip to the Warner Bros. Studios. This Halloween, it might be time to return to the magical studios to immerse yourself in the wonderfully sinister and mysterious Dark Arts feature that will have you hunting for the ‘Dark Mark’. While you’re there, you’ll be treated to the Great Hall decked out in full for a Halloween feast!
Take a trip out of London for the day
Luckily, there’s a tonne of places you can visit within an easy distance of London if you’d like to escape the Big Smoke for a day. If you fancy an outdoor adventure, enjoy a collective breath of fresh air as you take a walk through the New Forest and spot grazing ponies and deer. Alternatively, take a train to the historic Canterbury where you can go on a fun heritage walk, visit the Otherworldly Bookstore or attend a Fright at the Museum event!
For the teenagers
Check out the immersive Michelangelo exhibition
You and your family can experience the wonder of the Sistine Chapel like never before in this truly instagram-worthy exhibition – without the trip to Italy! These perspectives of Michelangelo’s masterpieces will be displayed life-sized in London from 15th October so you can take in the magnificence of his work up-close. If your kids liked the recent Van Gogh exhibition, they’ll love Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition!
Make the most of ice skating at the National History Museum
It may be a little early to get fully into the festive spirit, but this is the last year that you’ll be able to enjoy some magical ice-skating at the Natural History Museum ice rink before it’s transformed into an urban wildlife hub! The rink opens from 22nd October so round up the kids and savour this special ice-skating experience before the crowds hit nearer Christmas!
Go gothic for Halloween
England’s many ancient gothic castles are rich with history and more than a few ghostly tales! A spine-chilling trip to a nearby castle or manor house will get them truly in the Halloween spirit – and you’ll get to throw some history in there, too! Our favourites include tales of ghostly sightings in the Haunted Gallery at Hampton Court, the Tower of London and Hever Castle. Some of them even offer specific ghost tours so get ghost-busting over half term!
