November is a bumper month of great TV.  So, if you can tear yourself away from ‘I’m a Celebrity’, here are some great boxsets, movies and documentary recommendations that we think you’ll love!

BINGE-WORTHY BOXSETS

THE CROWN (Netflix) 

At last! Who hasn’t been waiting months for this? The Royal family drama continues with ten glorious new episodes.  This series introduces us to Diana  played by a wonderfully coquettish Emma Corrin and the marvellous Gillian Anderson who brilliantly portrays the Iron Lady.  It’s definitely been worth the wait, the big question is whether you can resist watching it in a oner!

 

RIVIERA  (SKY ATLANTIC)

Rivera returns for Season 3.  Georgina (Julia Stiles) and Gabriel (Rupert Graves) star together with Poppy Delevingne and Jack Fox.  Georgina abandons the glamorous and cursed French Riviera to start her life over again, only to be thrown into a dark and dangerous conspiracy.  Now a rising star in international art restitution, she has partnered up with the charismatic and worldly Gabriel (Rupert Graves) and together they scour the world for stolen works of art.  Not a patch on series 1 and 2 but still worth a watch.

THE SECRET GARDEN (Netflix)

The film is based on the classic children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. With a wonderful cast including Colin Firth and Julie Walters it tells the story of a young girl who is sent to live with her uncle. She discovers a beautiful garden and a local boy who helps her understand the garden’s secrets. A perfect family movie to watch in lockdown 2.

 

A LIFE AHEAD (Netflix)

Sophia Loren returns to the screen for the first time in 10 years in this great film directed by her son Edoardo Ponti.  The film tells the story of an unlikely friendship between Madame Rosa (Loren) and a bitter street kid.  Madame Rosa is a Holocaust survivor who wound up walking the streets of Naples, and now runs an informal creche for the kids of all the other women, including her best friend, played by the Spanish transgender performer Abril Zamora.

 

THE GREEN BOOK (SKY MOVIES)

Dr Don Shirley is a world-class African-American pianist, who is about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South in 1962. In need of a driver and protection, Shirley recruits Tony Lip, a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighbourhood in the Bronx. Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation.

 

JUST MERCY (SKY MOVIES)

After graduating from Harvard, Bryan Stevenson heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or those not afforded proper representation. One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian, who is sentenced to die in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite evidence proving his innocence. In the years that follow, Stevenson encounters racism and legal and political manouevrings as he tirelessly fights for McMillian’s life.
