Off the beaten track: Cool day trips to do with the kids!

We love a hidden gem! Forget all the usual, overcrowded hotspots over the summer and opt for a day trip with the kids that will take you somewhere a little quieter or more unusual. Here’s our top picks for the holidays:

Windsor Great Park’s Virginia Water

It’s been a big year with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and while you may want to avoid Windsor castle, which will no doubt be teeming with tourists, why not show some patriotism by visiting the beautiful Windsor Great Park and Virginia Water Lake instead! The lake is absolutely magnificent but there’s also waterfalls and beautiful viewpoints, as well activities for the kids to enjoy. It’s a really gorgeous day out in a super easy distance from bustling London.

Chislehurst Caves

Escape the heat and explore the cool labyrinth of caves in Chislehurst – a short train ride from central London. This is perfect for a more adventurous family as the dark, mysterious tunnels are not for the faint hearted! Become smugglers for the day and hear the gruesome history of Romans, Druids and Saxons that have roamed the caves as well as stories of smuggling and murder.

River Wey, Shalford

Have you ever taken the kids wild swimming? This beautiful spot on the River Wey allows you to avoid overcrowded pools and beaches and frolic and cool off in a quiet oasis. And what’s even better… it’s totally free! Check out other lovely wild swimming spots near London here.

Great Missenden

A little throwback treat for you but also great for the kids. Great Missenden is a cute, picturesque village that was famously home to one of the greatest children’s writers of all time, Roald Dahl! You can immerse yourself in storytelling at the Roald Dahl museum and explore gorgeous nearby countryside with footpaths, streams and gorgeous views in this area of outstanding beauty. It’s the very countryside that inspired his most treasured stories!

Seaside escapes (that aren’t Brighton!)

Margate

It’s not exactly a hidden gem but it’s worth reminding you that Margate really has all the charm of a British seaside town but with a modern, cool twist! Older kids will especially appreciate a quirky seaside trip here and if you go at the right time, there’s the Margate Soul Festival and many other live acts performing! You can also check out the contemporary art gallery, visit the Margate caves, go to Dreamland theme park and much more!

Deal

If you’re craving some beach time but also want a little more out of the day, the lovely hidden seaside town of Deal in Kent really is the perfect day trip. Once you’ve had your fill of the pretty pebble beach, explore Deal Castle built by Henry VIII, stop to eat at the many buzzy lunch spots and then visit the Deal Farmer’s Market. Before you head home make sure you stop by Le Pinardier to buy some divine bottles of specially selected French wine.
