Olympics – Faces to Watch
PyeongChang 2018 promises to be the most exciting Winter Games yet for Great Britain. With 17 glorious days ahead of figure skating, sliding, air acrobatics and curling who should we be looking out on the winning podium?
Lizzy Arnold – A previous gold winner at Sochi 2014 and this year’s UK flag bearer. Lizzy’s event is the Skeleton – an adrenaline, high-speed event involving her sliding face-down an ice track on a small sled – fastest time wins!
Elise Christie – Elise’s event is Short Track Speed Skating – she was made Sportswoman of the year in 2017, and whilst the overall World Champion by winning world titles in the 1000m and 1500m last year, she’s yet to bring home an Olympic medal. Elise will be high-speed ice skating against multiple skaters around an oval track.
James Woods – James came a respectable 5th at Sochi 2014 and so there are high hopes that he will get on the podium this year. His event is Slopestyle, a freestyle jumping event where the athletes show their best jump tricks across a variety of obstacles.
Dave Ryding – Dave’s event is Alpine Skating, which involves five lightning speed events downhill. The slalom, super G, downhill, giant slalom and combined.
Katie Ormerod – with recent news of Katie’s wrist fracture, there’s still no stopping Katie take on the Slopestyle and Pipe (Snowboarding) events this year – amazing tricks off huge jumps and the semi-cylindrical pipe.
And with high expectations for medals from both the Bobsleigh and Women’s and Men’s Curling teams, this could be our best Winter Olympics yet!
