Oakham School

Boarding 10-18yrs
Type: Prep, Senior
Pupil Numbers: 1044 (495 girls, 549 boys)
Entrance Procedure:

Lower School 10+ and 11+ entry
Candidates attend our Assessment Days held at Oakham, generally in January for entry in the following September. We can arrange for candidates from overseas to sit the examination abroad in their current school.
The Assessment Day explores a candidate’s potential and aptitudes and includes written papers in English and Mathematics, a writing and learning skills diagnostic test and an interview.

Middle School 13+ and 14+ entry
Entry is either through the Common Entrance Examination taken at the candidate’s preparatory school in June, or through the Oakham School Entrance Examination.
This examination consists of papers in English, Mathematics and Science.

Upper School 16+ entry
Candidates join at 16+ by providing a character reference and academic report indicating likely grades from their current school, followed by an academic interview.

Pre-testing
Two years before entry into Form 3/Year 9, during the first or second term of Year 7, registered pupils are invited for a pre-test. The pre-test consists of two parts: firstly an on-line assessment lasting approximately 45 minutes to an hour; secondly the opportunity for the boy/girl to discuss some work of their choice with the Deputy Head (Academic) or Director of Teaching and Learning. Assuming a positive outcome, the place won will be conditional on Common Entrance, or passing Oakham’s own 13+ entrance papers.

Fees per term: Day: £5,750 – £7,120 | Flexi-boarding: £6,850 – £11,085 | Full boarding: £8,705 – £11,670

What makes us different

As one of the largest co-educational boarding and day schools in the country, we are proud to offer a truly staggering range of experiences, activities and opportunities. Students can select to follow three different pathways at 16+ (A-levels, IB Diploma and BTECs). Hundreds of students take part in the Arts – there are five major drama productions every year, we teach over 500 individual music lessons each week, and our award-winning Art & Design Department is a hive of creative activity.

Oakham School also has a national reputation for Sport, offering 30 different sports to students of all levels – from enthusiasts to elite athletes. Activities are an integral part of life beyond the classroom, with students able to choose from over 130 activities to participate in each week, to discover and develop their interests and talents, and provide service to others.

Our uniquely structured student population – with 50% girls and 50% boys, and 50% of students boarding and 50% being day students – creates a genuinely inclusive and grounded school community who generate a friendly and warm atmosphere.

Our House structure ensures students have an age-appropriate space to develop and grow, surrounded by staff who are expertly trained to both support their needs and to challenge them to become independent, thoughtful, and responsible young adults.

Students also benefit from the School’s location close to Rutland Water, in the heart of rural England. They are able to enjoy the safety of living and working in a beautifully green campus just a few minutes’ walk from Oakham’s historic town centre and amenities, yet at the same time Oakham’s excellent road and rail links mean that London, Birmingham and Cambridge are all within easy reach.

By the time they leave us, Oakhamians are well rounded and confident young adults, equipped to ask the right questions, to know how to find the answers for themselves, and in doing so, to be able to make a difference in the world.
