Sherborne Girls

Day & Boarding 11-18yrs
Type: Senior
Pupil Numbers: 490
Entrance Procedure:

We recommend that you get the admissions process underway as early as possible. A good first step is to complete our Registration Form online at www.sherborne.com/admissions/registration. This will ensure you are updated at every stage of the admissions process. Our typical entry points are 11+, 13+ and 16+ as outlined below although we will consider girls at other times on a case by case basis.

For 11+ and 13+ entry, we suggest that you register your daughter by the end of Year 5. For both entry points, we ask girls to sit Online Pre-Tests in November of Year 6. Girls who meet our entry requirements will receive a conditional offer at this point.

11+ applicants will then be invited to attend a Boarding Taster and Assessment Weekend in December of Year 6 where they will sit an English and Maths paper, as well as a Science practical and interview. They will also take part in a carousel of fun activities to experience school life.

13+ applicants will be invited to attend our Assessment Day in January of Year 7 when they will also sit an English and Maths paper and an interview.

Following both the 11+ and 13+ assessments, girls who meet our entry requirements will receive an unconditional offer. If they go on to sit Common Entrance, we will use the results for setting purposes only.

For 16+ entry, girls are invited to sit assessments in November of Year 11. All candidates are expected to sit two to three papers, based on the subjects they wish to study at A Level, and they will also be interviewed by a member of the Sixth Form team.

Scholarships are available in the categories of Academic, Music and Sport at 11+ and Academic, Art & Design, Drama, Music and Sport at 13+ and 16+.

Head's Up

Start Date: 1 September 2018
Previous Roles: Ruth’s first role in education was at St John’s School, Leatherhead in 1996 where in addition to teaching Geography, she was Head of Outdoor Pursuits and a Housemistress. In 2001 Ruth moved to Glenalmond College to be Head of Geography and then in 2005 to Queen’s School, Chester to be Head of Sixth Form. Ruth then returned to university to do a Masters in Population and Health, followed by a PhD in Non-communicable Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Whilst completing her thesis, she re-entered the teaching profession at Haileybury College in 2011 as Acting Head of Geography before being promoted to Deputy Master in September 2012, with responsibility for overseeing the day to day running of the school, where she remained until her move to Sherborne Girls at Head in 2018.
Something people don't know about you: Ruth loves running and taking part in Triathlon events and half marathons. She also loves to travel, spends a lot of time reading, cooking, completing jigsaws and relishes walking her Cockapoo, Honey.

Mission Statement:  To provide a broad and enriching, full boarding education that develops the unique talents of every girl within a supportive community. To send out into the world girls of character, commitment and compassion who are able to think clearly and creatively, choose wisely and have the courage to make a difference.

As parents we love...

The school is kind, inspiring, aspirational, warm, caring, happy, encouraging, accepting, committed (the list goes on)

Girls are stretched and supported in equal measures and allowed to develop at their own pace. They are allowed to make mistakes, encouraged to try new subjects and activities and celebrated for who they are

Staff are dedicated, supportive and enthusiastic. The level of pastoral care with the bespoke tutor system for each child is incredible.

As pupils we love...

The best thing about boarding is that everyone is so friendly and the house feels like a home. It’s great to live with our friends, and to be alongside older girls.

The teaching at Sherborne Girls is inspirational. The teachers give us the confidence to believe in ourselves, to develop our enthusiasms and interests, and to think we can make a difference to the world.

We’ve always been encouraged to think of others, whether they’re in our local community or further afield. That’s an important feature of the learning experience at Sherborne Girls: it gives you a sense of service as well as of ambition

Admissions

We warmly invite you to visit Sherborne Girls as early as possible to see the School in action and meet the girls and staff. We recommend parents attend one of our Tour Mornings/Afternoons in the first instance. Numbers are limited at these events to ensure families get a personal experience. You are welcomed by the Housemistress/master before having a tour of the boarding house and campus with one of our girls. Following the tour, parents attend presentations and a Question & Answer session with the Head, members of the Senior Leadership Team and Head Girls. We are also delighted to arrange an individual visit. During the visit, one of our girls will give you a tour of the school before you meet with a boarding Housemistress/master, as well as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
