St Mary’s Calne

Day & Boarding 11-18yrs
Type: Senior
Pupil Numbers: 360 (290 Boarders, 70 Day)
Entrance Procedure: For entry at 11, 12 or 13+, girls will be invited to a Taster Day, which is an informal day full of activities that will encourage girls to get to know one another and become more familiar with the school and enable the school to begin to know them. They will then be invited to attend an Entrance Day which is a time for St Mary’s to assess and evaluate each girl. This is not a day of formal examinations; girls will sit a computerised test (Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning and numerical ability) and participate in other activities designed to assess each girl’s ability and future potential. Places are offered subject to satisfactory performance at examination – Common Entrance if their schools have prepared them or St Mary’s Own Entrance/Scholarship examinations. For Sixth Form entry, places are offered subject to satisfactory individual assessment – based on reports from the Head of their previous school and girls will sit written papers here at St Mary’s Calne and have an interview too. Offer of a place will be conditional on satisfactory GCSE results. Girls should achieve a minimum of six Grade 7s and it is expected that a Grade 7 or above at GCSE is achieved in the subjects which applicants wish to study at A Level.
Fees per term: Boarders: £13,760 | Day: £10,265

As parents we love...

  • Flexibility to cater for very different children’s skills, abilities and talents
  • Support given to the girls – academically, building independence and achieving their ambitions
  • Leadership of the school – sets the tone in pursuit of what one might call “excellence with compassion”

As pupils we love...

  • The culture of the school
  • The horizontal boarding (i.e. in year groups) throughout the school
  • The depth of friendships they are making

What makes us different

  • St Mary’s Calne is the first UK independent school to be awarded the Platinum Science Mark.
  • The size of the school (approx 360 girls) is a strength – small by design with around 60 girls per year group from 13-18.
  • The girls board in their year groups, (‘horizontal’ boarding), forming close friendship groups.
  • We run a Triennial Art Exhibition at a Gallery in London, exhibiting work by current girls and Alumnae, in addition to submissions from staff.
  • We offer a RADA Advanced Communications Skills Course as an option for Year 12 girls, as a direct result of our unique relationship with RADA. The course is the first of its kind in any school in the UK – or indeed anywhere.
  • We host an annual Show Jumping Event at West Wilts Equestrian Centre; each year pupils from approx. 22 schools compete.
  • Our Tennis Academy gained national recognition, being selected as a Finalist in the National LTA ‘School of the Year’ Tennis Awards, 2021 (from over 2,600 nominations).
