Head's Up

At The Willow we pride ourselves on nurturing all our children in a safe and fun environment, where they learn through play. We take our children’s mental health seriously and follow the emotional intelligence programme RULER along with our Golden Rules and motto “We’re all friends at The Willow”. We put every effort into preparing children for their move to Primary School both mentally, emotionally and educationally. During their first year the Caterpillars are encouraged to be more independent, to share toys with their friends and join in with all the activities on offer. Once the children are in the Butterfly group in their second year we spend more time on phonics, maths and literacy. We place an emphasis on manners and good behaviour.

The inside track from a current parent

My husband and I are thrilled that we chose to send our daughter to The Willow.

I visited most of the nursery schools in Clapham and Herne Hill and eventually we chose The Willow. We have not had a moment of doubt since our daughter started attending last September.

The school has a wonderfully nurturing atmosphere. All the staff are fantastic with the children. They seem keen to help the children reach their own individual potential while still maintaining a fun and caring environment.

Our daughter has shown a particular interest in all the wonderful arts and crafts activities that are on offer daily.

She is also learning to read and write with their regular number and letter exercises.

The school also places an importance on cookery and the children get to practice their own spreading with knives and cutting with scissors.

The children get lots of outside playtime in the fully equipped garden area.

The school includes a fantastic sports activity on a weekly basis that our daughter adores!

There are also lots of wonderful songs and musical highlights of the week.

Each small class group has a designated teacher and teacher’s assistants and follows a set weekly timetable. The timetables are a wonderful way to know exactly what our daughter is up to during her magical time at The Willow.

The school puts on a fantastic traditional nativity and other termly shows.

The school’s location is also perfect – close to the shops on Clapham High Street and just off the Common. Not too busy so the teachers are able to arrange fun little outings like visiting the local fire station or going to the local postbox etc.

The school also seems to place importance on the support of the parents – regular coffee mornings are arranged together with Christmas and summer parties.

I have met some lovely fellow mothers this way which has led to lots of fun playdates and hopefully lasting friendships.

I have no hesitation in highly recommending this amazing nursery school.

What makes us different

The Willow Nursery has been running for over thirty years in Clapham. We are privately owned and run. We have a wonderfully light and bright hall for the children to play in as well as our quiet Green Room where the children can choose a book, be read to or have quiet time. Our amazing garden is used every day by the children for play times and we are also able to plant bulbs in our flowerbed, play in the mud kitchen as well as kick a football or play in the cars. We teach our children about Emotional Intelligence using the RULER method, so we talk to them about feelings and how to manage their feelings. We have a very strong parent partnership and organise coffee mornings, as well as annual summer & Christmas parties. Our Nativity Play, Sports Day and Leavers Show are highlights of our school calendar and are normally standing room only!
