Head's Up

“We know each child, their strengths and their weaknesses and there is nowhere to hide. We can help when needed, praise and recognise the many achievements great and small and exhort and remind when necessary. Our small size means that we offer individual challenge and pastoral care to a far greater extent than can larger institutions.”

Andrea Johnson

The inside track from a current parent

I looked carefully and repeatedly at all the local options for my daughter. Wychwood stood out for me because of the people, both girls and staff, and because of its size. The girls are happy, the staff are open and friendly and clearly care about the girls and the school. They are open to questions, they all have a pride in what the school does and how they do it.

Small really is beautiful most of the time: when it does get tricky, the girls learn how to sort things out, negotiate their way to the next stage, move on – all valuable lessons! My daughter has become much more confident and is willing to give things a go. Her sense of self is more developed and she is happy, and that opens the door to everything else.

School life is busy and full of variety, but Wychwood is mindful not to overload the girls. Having taught in schools myself, there is a substantial difference at Wychwood in the nature and quality of communication both within the school and between school and home. The girls really are all recognised as the individuals they are, and the school, when it can, works with them. Nobody is overlooked, and all are encouraged.

Precisely because it is small, Wychwood can be flexible and accommodate special interests or needs and it will try its best to do so whenever possible. Education on this scale is much humane and pupil-based, and this, surely, has to be the better option for our children.

As parents we love...

  • The sense of belonging felt by the girls
  • The quality of the relationships throughout the school community, including parents, Old Girls and Governors
  • The minimising of an ‘institutional’ approach: this is an education based on the best interests of the pupils and teachers

As pupils we love...

  • The sense of community, they know everybody
  • They have fun
  • They are well supported when they need it
