White wine winners chosen for us by Helen McGinn

Forget the relative washout that’s been our Great British Summer so far and let’s focus on the small joys, starting with a perfectly chilled glass of white wine. Are you in the mood for something crisp & fresh or do you want something with a little more meat on its bones? Happy to go with a classic or fancy going off the beaten track? Here are Knackered Mothers Wine Club, Helen McGinn’s top picks, guaranteed to spark joy, whatever your preference.

Brilliant food-friendly Italian White

Tesco Finest Passerina, £7, Tesco

Made from one of Italy’s many, many brilliant grape varieties, this one’s from Abruzzo in central Italy and it’s all about the light floral and nectarine fruit flavours. Named after the sparrows who apparently love to eat this grape! Hard to resist.

Hidden gem from France’s Loire Valley

La Couronne des Plantagenets Vouvray, £7.25, Sainsbury’s

One of France’s best under-the-radar wines, this off-dry white made from the Chenin Blanc grape is just what you need when you’ve got lighter summer dishes on the table. A great match for grilled vegetables and herby salads.

Chardonnay that tastes more expensive than it is!

Tesco Finest New Zealand Chardonnay, £9, Tesco

From New Zealand’s North Island, this particular grape is producing some show-stopping wines here in Gisborne. Think ripe peach and pear fruit flavours with gentle spice from a little oak ageing, adding oomph (technical term) and texture.

And now for something completely different…

The Search Grenache Marsanne Roussanne, £9.99, Waitrose

Made by winemaker and expert surfer Trizanne Barnard in South Africa’s Paardeberg region, this is a blend of three classic Rhone white grapes. Grenache Blanc is the spine, Roussanne brings peach & floral notes and Marsanne adds weighty fruit flavours. Refreshingly different.

Greek sunshine in a glass

M&S Found Moscofilero & Roditis, £8.50, M&S

From a new range of wines called Found from M&S that champions little known grapes, this blend brings together aromatic Moschofilero and citrusy Roditis. Beautifully fresh and floral with a touch of salt and honey.
