Bee Osborn on beautifying your bathroom

We’re in lockdown again! Time to retreat to your haven and very often it’s your bathroom…

Here our Interiors expert, Bee Osborn gives us her invaluable advice and tips on how to make the most of your bathroom.

DO

  • Always add that extra bit of storage, you can never have too much storage space
  • Ensure there is adequate ventilation, preferably mechanical to minimize the risk of mould
  • Put in underfloor heating, and make sure to choose your flooring material accordingly
  • Put in a heated towel rail, they are a wonderful way of drying your towels and adding warmth to the room
  • Use demister pads behind wall mirror or within mirrored cabinet doors, to clear the steam on mirrors
  • Always use skilled professionals to do the plumbing and electrical works
  • Always get samples before purchasing a material – all colours and materials look different depending on the lighting in the room

DON’T

  • Compromise on the sanitary and brassware, these items need to withstand daily wear and tear
  • Cut corners on quality, remember to choose materials that are durable and that can handle the moisture in a bathroom
  • Forget to check the slip resistance for your flooring, always keep healthy and safety in mind !
  • Forget the importance of lighting, you need task lighting as well as lighting to set the mood. Having dimmers in a bathroom is a lovely touch and using beautiful light fixtures can completely transform the bathroom.

NEW PRODUCTS AND FASHIONS

  • Why not go with a more interesting wallcovering than paint? Use tadelakt plaster as an alternative for tiles or install timber panelling to add texture and layers to your bathroom
  • Use natural materials and textures, to add interest and warmth to make your bathroom feel like a sanctuary
  • Bring in the bath trays and candles to create a cosy feeling
  • Brass fixtures and fittings are getting more and more popular. As well as darker fittings.
  • Freestanding slipper baths and double vanities are incredibly luxurious and inviting if you have space
