Bee Osborn shares her top tips on sustainable interior design choices

Ahead of COP26 it’s time we start taking responsibility for our environmental impact and consider greener design decisions. Below are a few ways how we can start making more sustainable choices when it comes to furnishing and designing our homes by Bee Osborn.

  1. Start by shopping local where possible,  it’s a fantastic way of reducing waste and transport emissions. This supports a greener future as well as your local companies.
  2. Trends are fun and we all get excited about the newest rage, but try to remember not to follow these blindly or you will be changing up your home seasonally. Instead consider investing in timeless design that will last and fit your style for years to come.
  3. Inexpensive can seem very tempting, but always consider the materials, the durability as well as the longevity of the item. You may not have saved any money in the end if you end up replacing it almost instantly. But remember, high price tag doesn’t necessarily mean great quality or sustainably sourced.
  4. Another great way is by selecting eco-friendly and sustainable companies and suppliers.  Look at companies like Weaver Green who make beautiful recycled plastic rugs out of discarded plastic bottles without compromising on style. There are an increasing amount of forward-thinking companies out there ready for you to discover.
  5. Follow the three R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle.

  6. Consider choosing a few reclaimed or vintage pieces for your home. This is a fantastic way of adding unique items to your space that have already proven their durability.
  7. Upcycle your old items, by giving them new life with a lick of paint or some new handles.
  8. Think about the materials you use. Bamboo and rattan are a great sustainable alternatives as they both grow fast, are durable as well as biodegradable. Other sustainable materials are wool, jute, cotton and linen.
  9. Another simple, yet efficient way to reduce energy consumption in our homes is by hanging curtains and putting down carpet and rugs to help with insulation and keeping the cold out.
  10. Consider choosing environmentally friendly and non-toxic paints. Look at companies such as Eico, Farrow & Ball and Little Greene to start with.
  11. Lastly, don’t rush and panic buy. Stop and think if it really is something you love and can see yourself having in your home for many years to come.
