May Book Club by Camilla Leask

Camilla Leask, our brilliant Book Club guru, gives us her top picks for May!

Freelance books publicist and mum of two, Camilla has worked predominantly with children’s authors for 14 years. There’s nothing she doesn’t know about books, hot off the press new releases and what our members and their families will enjoy reading.

FOR ADULTS:

UNBREAK YOUR HEART by Katie Marsh publishes on 27th May (Hodder & Stoughton, PB £8.99)

An emotional, heart-warming novel, set in the Lake District. The story follows Beth, a nurse who has fled New York and a broken marriage, and is renting the cottage next to single dad Simon and his seven-year old son Jake, who was born with an all-consuming, life-limiting heart condition. Determined not to be defined by his illness, Jake focuses on finding love for his dad.  As she gets to know her neighbours better, Beth’s life is changed forever by her growing love for Jake, and for his dad.

FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATION:

STARBOARD by Nicola Skinner (HarperCollins, HB £12.99), out now

Following the success of Bloom, award-winning author Nicola Skinner delivers another unique, funny and moving adventure about 11-year old Kirsten, a YouTube star who’s keeping up appearances. But when she goes on a school trip to SS Great Britain, the ship comes alive, breaks free from its dry dock and claims Kirsten as the new captain. So begins a journey of discovery for everyone on board, not least, the ship itself.

Inspired by the true history of the SS Great Britain, Starboard is about friendship, heroism and bravery. This is an utterly bonkers but no less emotional, heartwarming story about taking control of your own life and finding out what makes you truly happy.

EXTINCT: First in the series – Hallucigenia – (Zephyr, £15 per book) by Professor Ben Garrod, illustrated by Gabriel Ugueto

Ben Garrod  – award-winning broadcaster and Professor of Evolutionary Biology and Science Engagement at the University of East Anglia – is famous for making top level science accessible to everyone. His new series is no exception, and explores eight iconic species (one per book) lost in a mass extinction, each book crammed with Gabriel Ugueto’s stunning illustrations.

Anyone who has seen Ben on TV will know how passionate he is about conserving species, saving habitats and ecosystems. To do this, he believes we need to better understand the ‘dazzling creativity and destruction of extinction.’ Launching this month, books 1-3 introduce us to the weird and wonderful worlds of Hallucigenia, Dunkleosteus and Trilobite, exploring the causes and effects of their extinctions.

Camilla Leask has worked with literary giants including Waterstone’s Children’s Laureate 2019-2022 Cressida Cowell, the late Michael Bond and Paddington Bear, Enid Blyton Entertainment and the Narnia Estate among many others.
