Shooting for the stars

What is the secret behind Tring Park School and its dazzling list of alumni?

The stunning Tring Park in Herts

What do Lily James (Cinderella, War and Peace, Mama Mia 2), Thandie Newton (Westworld, Crash),  Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi), Ella Henderson (The X Factor) and Drew McOnie (Olivier Award-winning choreographer and director of forthcoming King Kong for Broadway) have in common?  They all went to the same school, along with hundreds of other film, TV and theatre stars.

Tring Park School for the Performing Arts’ glittering alumni is second to none. The school has a long history in creating actors, singers and dancers of national and international renown.

Its superb teachers, all of whom have many years’ experience in performing arts and teaching, combined with its first-class facilities, provide children with a love of performing arts the opportunity to pursue their passion.

The staff nurture their students’ flair for performing from the young age of eight, where alongside their academic studies, the vocational courses give children the chance to begin learning about ballet, modern dance, tap and drama.

Principal Stefan Anderson believes its success is down to the students’ motivation levels:

“The environment at the school is unique; the students know that pursuing their passion for performing arts at Tring Park School puts them in a very privileged position” he says.

“This means they are very self-motivated to succeed. They follow a timetable of half a day of vocational studies and half a day of academic studies, which helps the students to achieve outstanding academic results in both GCSEs and A Levels.”

And the setting does nothing to dampen their motivation: the Rothschild mansion, as well as beautiful, is a highly flexible space with rooms that have been adapted into practice and rehearsal space for the vocational curriculum of acting, music and dance.  Other rooms inside the mansion and neighbouring buildings have classrooms for the study of all our

academic subjects on the curriculum.

Tring Park also has a new building that houses five performance studios, but the icing on the cake for Tring Park is that the school has its own 176-seater theatre, which gives the students the perfect opportunity to perform their shows in a real-life stage setting.

And the students’ performance opportunities are not restricted to the Markova Theatre. The school’s expertise and contacts in the world of performing arts also means that the pupils have opportunities to perform at the Royal Albert Hall and the London Coliseum, as well as taking part in UK tours.

Tring Park also boasts a recording studio for students on the Commercial Music Course, which teaches pupils how to write original material, create arrangements and write for commissions as well as taking part in industry masterclasses and networking opportunities.

Work has also started on the first stage of a £12 million development project, which includes a four-storey building that will contain a state-of-the-art boarding house for 70 pupils, six academic and vocational teaching spaces, a theatre workshop and other valuable pupil facilities.

The facilities, exceptional academic results coupled with the world-class performing arts training the students receive, gives them the best start in life.
